Last week marked a significant milestone in the financial markets, with the S&P 500, Nasdaq, and Dow all achieving record highs. The success of these indices was buoyed by strong performances in certain sectors, particularly Consumer Discretionary and Information Technology. Conversely, Real Estate, Energy, and Utilities lagged, highlighting a disparity in sectoral momentum.

Economic data from last week presented a mixed picture of growth and challenges. Labor market indicators took center stage, with the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) reporting a remarkable 7.7 million job openings in October, exceeding forecasts. However, the ADP private employment report revealed a more subdued labor market, with only 146,000 hires in November, falling short of estimates by about 20,000. On a brighter note, non-farm payrolls surged by 194,000, well above expectations, while the unemployment rate held steady at 4.2%, aligning with predictions. Average hourly earnings also grew by 0.4%, signaling steady wage gains for workers. Initial jobless claims added to the optimism, beating forecasts with a decline to approximately 206,000. Beyond labor, other economic indicators painted a nuanced picture. Factory orders edged up by 0.2% in October, slightly below expectations, reflecting slower momentum in manufacturing growth. Elevated ISM manufacturing and construction spending readings earlier in the week provided a counterbalance, suggesting resilience in certain sectors. These mixed signals illustrate the complexities of the current economic landscape.
Looking ahead, this week’s economic calendar offers critical insights into inflation and business conditions. Reports on wholesale inventories for October and the NFIB small business optimism index for November will provide early-week highlights. The release of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Producer Price Index (PPI) later in the week will shed light on inflationary trends, while the import price index will close the week with additional context on trade-related price pressures.
Amidst these developments, the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) continues to shape industries and drive economic efficiencies. Notable players in the AI space, such as ServiceNow and Palantir, exemplify the transformative potential of technology. ServiceNow, whose stock has risen over 60% in the past year, offers cloud-based workflow solutions that enhance IT management, human resources, and supply chain operations. Similarly, Palantir has experienced remarkable growth, with its stock price surging by approximately 300% over the past year. Palantir derives nearly 40% of its revenue from public sector contracts. Its advanced AI, machine learning, and cybersecurity solutions make it a critical player in both public and private domains. These companies highlight how innovation can drive significant economic value and societal benefits.
The breakthroughs in AI serve as a reminder of humanity’s capacity for ingenuity, while also pointing to the infinitely greater creativity of God. As expressed in Revelation 4:11, “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.” The marvels of technology, while extraordinary, pale in comparison to the wonder of creation itself.
