A RESOLUTION REVOLUTION T Adrian Young

JD, MBA, CAP®, CFP® Executive Vice President

he air was thick with anticipation. A great army, an assembly of the fiercest warriors from near

and far, approached the gates of the impenetrable fortress. Breaking the silence, a battle cry rang out: “Hi. My name is Teddy Ruxpin. Can you and I be friends?” Flanked by a legion of Transformers on both sides and a sleuth of Care Bears at his rear, Teddy

Ruxpin led the charge across the bedroom floor. Te labyrinth of LEGO bricks that made up the enemy fortress took nearly two days to construct, and it was guarded by a platoon of little green army men. Inside, He-Man and Batman surveyed the oncoming assault and readied the fleet of Tonka trucks to meet the advancing horde. Outmanned and outgunned, it would certainly be one for the ages!

As the oldest of four boys, I enjoyed many perks, like being able to unabashedly play with toys for much longer than most of my friends. Of course, there were also a host of challenges, not the least of which was having three younger brothers! When my frustrated youngest brother argued that his teddy bear’s size should allow him to “destroy” my carefully constructed fortifications—and all other opposition forces, for that matter— quickly resolving the growing conflict became essential. Doing so would mean the difference between continued enjoyment and complete mayhem (inevitably followed by an unpleasant “intercession” by my father). Although

my desire for resolution was driven solely by self interest and a fear of “intercession” back then, years of personal and professional experience provided me with the opportunity to witness a handful of truly successful craftsmen in the art of conflict resolution. For these experts, embracing a mindset of patience and fairness when dealing with others wasn’t just about mutually beneficial resolution, it was a tangible manifestation of spiritual fruit.

Te United States just survived one of the most divisive elections in history, but continues to teeter on the brink of what can easily be described as mayhem and, at worse, self destruction. Social media remains a breeding ground for rumors and opinions completely devoid of consideration for our fellow citizen, and so much of our interaction, as a society, has become virtual that there is no longer a fear of repercussion for what is said and done. In fact, conflict has almost become currency these days; the more sensationalized and divisive the soundbite or post, the more dollars it attracts. As citizens, we must take the lead in devaluing this new currency, because such a devaluation can’t come from the Federal Reserve.

Devaluing the currency of conflict, like keeping the talking teddy bear from becoming a LEGO wrecking ball, is going to take a revolution…a Resolution Revolution. Te instructions are simple: Be considerate of others; be patient and fair in your dealings; and, if you want to be a true revolutionary, Love Ty Neighbor (with 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 as your guide).
