Tere is a metaphor about faith that the Apostle Paul makes in 1 Corinthians 9:23-25: “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize?”

He then says, “So run that you may obtain it.” If we run the race, and the end goal of winning is to glorify God, then this metaphor touches upon all we do, including our stewardship. Our prize is to hear our Master say,

“Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master,” (Matthew 25:21).

Likewise, when runners prepare for a race, they must know and understand what it will take to win. Tey must understand the best way to train, as well as the course they will run and the obstacles that may lay ahead, in order to reach their goal and gain the prize. Unfortunately, some runners don’t take the time to learn these important lessons. Tis leaves them unable to finish strong, and they often end up well below their desired goal.

At Ambassador Advisors, our goal is to coach individuals and educate donors about what lies ahead, as they prepare to cross the finish line in their financial life. Without this knowledge, what may be originally intended for ministries and family may end up supporting causes they had never intended. Simple adjustments to a legacy plan will aid in removing obstacles that would otherwise prevent a strongly desired result. Mid-race adjustments include making sure that highly-taxable assets are directed to ministries, updating a last will and testament, and changing beneficiaries on qualified retirement plans or life insurance policies. Te coaching process with our clients continues through planned giving seminars, newsletters, videos and email blasts.

If you are a leader of a nonprofit, you have been given an important audience of supporters who care about your organization’s sustainability. With that in mind, take the role of coaching seriously in 2015. Are you doing all you can to educate supporters about legacy planning, so that your organization reaps a bountiful financial harvest from purposeful coaching and teaching?

As we all run the race faithfully together, we will be given the ultimate prize of hearing God say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Trough purposeful planning and wise stewardship, we can all run the race well, so that future generations will see our example and join the race.
