IS A GOOD OFFENSE: the value of active management

THE BEST DEFENSE

It has long been said that “defense wins championships.” In the world of investing, much like the world of sports, being adequately “defensive,” especially toward the end of “the big game,” has helped many investors ensure they accumulated sufficiently to achieve their goals, as well as maintained enough to pass on to the next generation.

Times have changed, though. Offensive firepower in sports is more dynamic than ever, and rule changes and equipment advances have made scoring, even against the staunchest of defenses, much easier. For example, the St. Louis Rams became a Super Bowl champion through their “Greatest Show on Turf” offense. Te team did not boast a stout defense, but the offense’s ability to score and control the ball overcame any defensive shortcomings.

In the same way, market forces have precipitated changes in investing, so that offensive “weapons” in well- diversified positions are a must. Investors must be able to “score” from all angles, regardless of market conditions. Gone are the days of relying on a good defensive investment — be it gold, real estate, or a local bank stock — to

provide asset appreciation and protection. Ambassador Advisors’ offensive strategy is to find tactical opportunities within sectors of the economy that can provide high return relative to risk.

Completely abandoning one’s defense in hopes of striking it rich or scoring big, however, is never a wise decision; we must be wary of gimmicks akin to the “prevent defense.” Far too often, good quarterbacks would feast on this defensive strategy that gives up chunks of underneath yardage in hopes of avoiding the “big play.” Loss after loss by teams utilizing this short-lived strategy, led to the onerous cliché, “Te only thing the prevent defense prevents is winning.” Likewise, regardless of age, the need for a well-diversified mindset is essential. Outpacing taxes and inflation, and preparing for the unforeseen all demand active attention and management of your finances. Don’t “prevent” yourself from finishing strong and winning the game — keep active and let our offense be your best defense.
