hen you think about it, being a superhero has to be tough. Superheroes live day to day, putting out fires and responding to emergencies. Sure, they have pretty cool super powers, but they never really know what tomorrow will bring. When
duty calls, they answer, even though there is an endless line of supervillains waiting to cause chaos!
It must be difficult not being able to plan for tomorrow. We have the ability to look ahead in our lives. Tanks to great teams like Ambassador Advisors, we can make sure our lives are in financial order, with a focus on legacy and stewardship. It helps us live day to day with peace of mind.
For Baby Boomers, tomorrow will look different from what our parents or grandparents experienced. We are redefining what it means to age. Chronological age is fast becoming irrelevant and subjective age (how old we feel) is racing toward the forefront of how we live. Plans for tomorrow may include working past traditional retirement age. Some of us become entrepreneurs, while still others focus on giving back through volunteerism and philanthropy. Te choices are as diverse as we are.
Tis is the time in our lives when the kids are grown, and perhaps grandchildren are life’s new joy. We are entering our sixth, seventh, or even eighth decade on this planet. Tis is a significant time in our lives, and some of us may be overlooking a key planning opportunity.
is available in terms of family support, senior market services, appropriate housing, transportation, community settings and social connections.
For example, consider if your current home is capable of supporting you as you age. Are there some affordable modifications you can make to better position your home to support you for the next 20-30 years? Have you thought about moving or downsizing to make things easier to manage? Have you thought about where you would like to live? Why are people moving into Life Plan Communities (also known as CCRCs)? And if you decide that is something to consider, when is the timing right? With so many choices, how do you even go about the process of choosing?
Let me tell you what I mean. Early on in adult life, we plan financially to buy a home and start a family. When we take a vacation, we make sure a roadside assistance service is available if the car breaks down. Many of us take the time to do some estate planning. We have plans and dreams that we share with family and friends.
We sometimes overlook the next great opportunity to plan: the chance to envision what we would like our days to look like as we get older.
If you have family close by or even far away, have you told them what your plans are? Have you talked to them about the role they might play in those plans? If you decide you want to live in your current home, or downsize, do you know what resources are available to fill in the cracks should you need extra help?
May I suggest to you that by asking yourself these questions, talking through your goals and wishes with your loved ones, and doing the work now to better position yourself to handle future challenges that may arise, you become a new kind of superhero–a superhero to yourself and to those around you. If this seems like a daunting task and you are unsure where to start, you are not alone. Companies like GPS Life Transition Partners, LLC stand ready to assist and to provide Guidance, Planning and Solutions to navigate you through. GPS helps you to understand the landscape ahead, become
familiar with relevant paths to consider, and empower you to make the right decisions when it’s time.
Yet as we get older, we sometimes overlook the next great opportunity to plan: the chance to envision what we would like our days to look like as we get older. I’m talking about things like where you would like to live and how you intend to stay in control of your life, setting yourself up to age successfully.
Have you thought about what resources you can to turn to when you need them? No one likes to think about challenges that may be in our future; and in fact, many tend to ignore those potential speed bumps. Does Superman ever plan on kryptonite being right around the corner? I’m here to tell you that proactively understanding how we can handle challenges is easier than simply reacting to them if they happen. Maybe you’ll make some lifestyle changes that will head those challenges off at the pass. Be proactive instead of reactive. So, when your kryptonite shows up, you have plan in place to fight it. Tis means considering what
By taking this opportunity to think through this period in life, you can give yourself and those around you peace of mind. When kryptonite appears, you have a plan to face it—or maybe your planning can help avoid the kryptonite altogether. You will also have set a great example for the next generation, reduced their burden, and allowed them to play a meaningful role. You can then stay in control and concentrate on living every day to its fullest. It’s an act of love for yourself, and a gift to those around you. Now if that isn’t a fresh take on being a superhero, I don’t know what is.
